After establishing successfully in the A-segment and B-segment cars in the country successfully, Maruti Suzuki India limited (MSIL) has upped its ante in D-segment as it would be launching its first luxury family car “Kizashi’ by 2009 end. The car will be the first all-wheel drive sedan in the luxury D-segment by India’s largest passenger carmaker. Though, pricing and other details were not revealed by the company yet, but it is widely believed the car would be priced at around Rs. 10 lakh and would be rolled out from MSIL’s state-of-the-art-facility in Manesar. Once launched, it would be pitted against Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla Altis, Skoda Auto Octavia and Volkswagen Jetta et al. Industry sources have revealed that Maruti engineers have already began working on Kizashi to take it from the concept stage to the production platform.

According to sources who requested anonymity, Kizashi will carry an advanced four-valve turbo-fired two-litre petrol, Euro V engine, which will also be premiered at the same time. Moreover, it would also be mated to a six-speed transmission. A crossover sports sedan, Kizashi, which depicts an athlete in motion, is likely to sport 21 inch alloys, added sources.

The Kizashi Concept was first unveiled by Suzuki at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Kizashi ? meaning ‘prelude’ or ‘foretaste’ ? suggests what form Suzuki’s future will take. The Kizashi will be Suzuki’s first-ever D-segment car, which targets an uncompromised combination of affordability and emotional appeal, in addition to ensuring the cabin roominess that is essential for a D-segment. With its modern, contemporary styling, spacious cabin, good ride quality, competitive pricing and the Maruti sales and service network, the Maruti Suzuki Kizashi just might cause a few headaches for established players in the entry-level D-segment in India.
