The eastern region of the country contributes about 13% to the total turnover of car major Maruti Suzuki (India) Ltd. The aim of the company is to take it to 20% by next fiscal.
Maruti enjoys 51% market share of passenger cars in the east, said Anabel Praveen Tiga, territory sales manager of Maruti Suzuki (I) Ltd.”We do such Mahotsavs or rural car carnivals to increase awareness of the Maruti brand and dealerships in a particular region,” he told reporters.
The main target customers of such carnivals comprise traders, panchayat members, teachers, tractor owners and doctors.”These carnivals started just six months back across India. Till now, 60 have been held across the country and six in the state to increase rural market sales,” said Anirban Mukherjee, rural marketing manager of the car major.Four more carnivals will take place in the state this fiscal.
“In West Bengal, rural market sales account for only 16% of total sales in the state,” he said.The rural market, which contributes 30-35% of sales nationally, prefers cars such as Alto, Omni, Zen and Wagon R, the price range of which varies between Rs 2 lakh and 3.8 lakh.When asked about last fiscal’s sales figure, Mukherjee said: “Only 368 units were sold in the first half of the last fiscal, whereas 950-1,000 units were sold in the first half of this fiscal.”According to the rural marketing manager, Alto is the highest selling car in the east.
